Vitamin B2 (Folic acid)

Vitamin B2 is a water-soluble vitamin and is part of the vitamin B group.

Function:

  • Helps to reduce the risk of nervous system defects in unborn babies.
  • Works with vitamin B12 to form healthy red blood cells.

 

Sources:

  • Fortified breakfast cereals, broccoli, brussels sprouts, liver, chickpeas, spinach, asparagus and peas.

 

Deficiency:

It can reduce the risk of having a baby born with a nervous system defect called spina bifida.  It means split spine and is a defect of the backbone.

 

Excess:

No harmful side effects have been reported of having too much folic acid.
